TEHRAN\/WASHIN\u00adGTON(National Times)- Amid reports about Iran\u2019s plan to make a fresh proposal, US President Donald Trump on Wedn\u00adesday\u00a0rejected<\/a>\u00a0an Iranian offer to end the conflict, saying that the naval blockade would remain till Tehran agreed to a nuclear deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US president told Axios<\/em> that the blockade was \u201csomewhat more effective than the bombing\u201d and things would get \u201cworse for them\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey want to settle. They don\u2019t want me to keep the blockade. I don\u2019t want to [lift the blockade], because I don\u2019t want them to have a nuclear weapon,\u201d he added during the 15-minute interview with Axios.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian proposal, passed along by Pakistan, had laid out red lines, including on nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz. The plan would reportedly see Tehran ease its chokehold on the strait and Washington lift its retaliatory blockade while broader negotiations continue, including over the nuclear programme. However, it was rejected and a new offer is on the cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, The Washington Post<\/em> in a report quoted multiple US officials as saying that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford would depart the Middle East and begin the sail for home in coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned withdrawal comes as an expected relief for roughly 4,500 sailors, who have been deployed there for 10 months, but a loss of significant firepower as peace talks between the United States and Iran stagnate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Iran\u2019s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, according to Al Jazeera,<\/em> said Iran\u2019s supply and distribution of fuel remained stable despite the US blockade on Iranian ports. Iran\u2019s parliament speaker Bagher Ghalibaf said the US wanted to divide Iran using the blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US president also discussed the Iran war with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, days after the visit <\/a>of Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to St Petersburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump said he talked \u201ca little bit\u201d. \u201cHe told me he\u2019d like to be involved with the enrichment, if he can help us get it,\u201d Trump said, referring to retrieving Iran\u2019s stockpile of enriched uranium. \u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019d much rather have you be involved with ending the war in Ukraine.\u2019 To me, that\u2019d be more important,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghalibaf calls for unity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe enemy has entered a new phase and wants to activate economic pressure and internal division through naval blockade and media hype to weaken or even make us collapse from within,\u201d Ghalibaf added, calling for \u201cmaintaining unity\u201d as the only solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the US president told oil executives that the US could extend its naval blockade of Iran for months more. \u201cIran can\u2019t get their act together\u2026 They better get smart soon,\u201d Trump posted<\/a> on his social media platform, above a mocked-up picture of himself toting a rifle in front of explosions wrecking a desert fortress and the slogan: \u201cNo more Mr. Nice Guy!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, Trump discussed with the oil executives \u201csteps we could take to continue the current blockade for months if needed and minimise impact on American consumers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent crude rises to $117<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

News that peace talks remained stalled pushed oil prices higher one again, with Brent crude for June delivery rising more than five per cent to $117 \u2014 its highest level since a fragile US-Iran ceasefire <\/a>came into effect on April 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran has blockaded the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 a vital conduit for oil and gas shipments from the Gulf \u2014 since the US and Israel launched the war two months ago, sending shockwaves through the global economy. But its own economy is also suffering. On Wednesday, the Iranian rial fell to historic lows against the dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran warned on Wednesday of \u201cunprecedented military action\u201d against continued US blockading of Iran-linked vessels. Trump has stressed repeatedly that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, while Tehran says its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018No trust\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a White House state dinner on Tuesday, Trump told Britain\u2019s King Charles III and other guests that Iran had been \u201cmilitarily defeated\u201d, and added: \u201cCharles agrees with me even more than I do \u2014 we\u2019re never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But an Iranian army spokesman told state TV<\/em> on Tuesday that \u201cwe do not consider the war to be over\u201d, saying Tehran had \u201cno trust in America\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have many cards that we have not yet used\u2026 new tools and methods of fighting based on the experiences of the past two wars, which will definitely allow us to respond to the enemy more decisively\u201d should the fighting resume, Amir Akraminia said in an interview.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
