If the prime minister is found to have knowingly misled par\u00ad\u00ad\u00adliament, his position would likely become untenable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House of Commons Spe\u00adaker Lindsay Hoyle said he approved a request from opposition Conser\u00advative Party leader Kemi Bade\u00adnoch for a debate and vote on whether the Committee of Privileges should investigate the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy stems from Starmer\u2019s decision to hire Mandelson, who was fired last September after his relationship with the late US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1986100\">sex offender Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>&nbsp;was found to be deeper than previously known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident has raised doubts about Starmer\u2019s judgement, particularly after it was revealed a security vetting body was leaning against granting clearance for the appointment \u2014 a decision foreign ministry officials overruled without telling the prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesperson from Starmer\u2019s office described the push for a vote as a \u201cdes\u00ad\u00adperate political stunt\u201d ahe\u00adad of local elections on May 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government also published a letter from a former senior civil servant saying he concluded \u201cthat appropriate processes were followed\u201d.
