{"id":124927,"date":"2026-04-28T08:53:01","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T03:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=124927"},"modified":"2026-04-28T08:53:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T03:53:02","slug":"russia-backs-iran-as-peace-efforts-with-us-remain-stalled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/124927\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia backs Iran as peace efforts with US remain stalled"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ST PETERSBURG \/ WASHINGTON(National Times)- As the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1995338\">\u00a0peace talks\u00a0<\/a>between the US and Iran hit a roadblock over the nuclear deal and the Strait of Hormuz closure, Russia\u2019s President Vladimir Putin assured Iran\u2019s top diplomat Abbas Araghchi that Moscow would do everything it could to help secure peace in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remarks by the Russian president came during Araghchi\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1995421\/iran-fm-araghchi-says-he-discussed-conditions-for-continuing-us-talks-with-friends-in-pakistan\">visit<\/a>&nbsp;to Saint Petersburg, where he met the Russian president to discuss the ongoing peace negotiations with the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Araghchi had arrived in St Petersburg on the fourth leg of a whirlwind diplomatic tour, having sandwiched a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1995225\/oman-sultan-stresses-importance-of-prioritising-diplomacy-during-meeting-with-iran-fm-araghchi\">&nbsp;trip to Oman<\/a>&nbsp;in between two&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1994958\/iranian-delegation-led-by-araghchi-leaves-after-meeting-pm-cdf-munir-trump-cancels-us-envoys-visit\">visits<\/a>&nbsp;to Pakistan over the past few days. In Islamabad, he met the Pakistani army chief and the prime minister to discuss Iran\u2019s response to the US peace proposals for ending the Middle East war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Fars<\/em>&nbsp;news agency reported that Iran had passed \u201cwritten messages\u201d to the Americans via Pakistan, spelling out red lines, including nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump held talks with his top security advisors, reportedly to discuss the Iranian proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the meeting,&nbsp;<em>ABC<\/em>&nbsp;News quoted two unidentified US officials as saying that a new deal proposed by Tehran to resolve the conflict fell short of Washington\u2019s red lines. That deal centred on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending a US naval blockade of the vital waterway, with nuclear negotiations postponed for a later stage,&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>US blamed for talks\u2019 failure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Araghchi, however, blamed Washington for the failure of talks in Pakistan \u2014 the first and only round of negotiations. \u201cThe US approaches caused the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, to fail to reach its goals because of the excessive demands,\u201d he said Monday. Following their meeting, President Putin and Araghchi both voiced their commitment to the two countries\u2019 \u201cstrategic relationship\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor our part, we will do everything that serves your interests, the interests of all the people of the region, so that peace can be achieved as soon as possible,\u201d Russian state media quoted President Putin as telling Araghchi. He also hailed \u201chow courageously and heroically the people of Iran are fighting for their independence and sovereignty\u201d, the TASS news agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRussia, just like Iran, intends to continue our strategic relationship,\u201d Putin added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, who is visiting Kyrgyzstan, held talks with Iran\u2019s Deputy Defence Minister Reza TalaeiNik,&nbsp;<em>Al Jazeera<\/em>&nbsp;reported citing Russia\u2019s&nbsp;<em>TASS<\/em>&nbsp;news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Belousov reiterated Russia\u2019s longstanding position that the US-Israeli war on Iran should be resolved exclusively through diplomatic means, and that he was confident Moscow and Tehran would continue to support one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump meets aides<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that President Trump met with his national security team on Monday and discussed Iran\u2019s proposal on reopening the key waterway, but did not offer many details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe president\u2019s red lines, with respect to Iran have been made very, very clear, not just to the American public but to them as well,\u201d she told reporters during a press briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say they\u2019re considering it; I would just say that there was a discussion this morning that I don\u2019t want to get ahead of,\u201d she said of the proposal, noting that Trump would address the topic \u201cvery soon\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her remarks came after the White House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1993012\">declined&nbsp;<\/a>to comment on the reports surrounding the contents of the Iranian proposal, with officials insisting that sensitive matters would not be discussed through the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the United States will not negotiate through the press,\u201d Assistant White House Press Secretary Olivia Wales told reporters, reiterating President Donald Trump\u2019s position that Washington would only accept a deal that serves American interests and prevents Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran was \u201cserious\u201d about reaching a deal with the US, but any agreement must prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon. \u201cI think they are serious about getting themselves out of the mess that they\u2019re in,\u201d Rubio told&nbsp;<em>Fox<\/em>&nbsp;News in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pointed to Iran\u2019s worsening economic conditions, including inflation, difficulties paying wages, as well as ongoing sanctions, saying: \u201cAll the problems that Iran had before the start of this conflict are still in place, and most of them are worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to ensure that any deal that is made \u2026 definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Iran, US spar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the US and Iran traded sharp remarks over Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme at the opening of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference at the UN headquarters in New York City. The conference will also consider Iran\u2019s election as one of 34 vice-presidents, as it was nominated by the Non-Aligned Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diplomatic sources at the UN told&nbsp;<em>Dawn<\/em>&nbsp;the United States opposed the move, supported by Australia and the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom, France and Germany expressed concern. Russia objected to singling out Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US delegation informed the meeting that Washington was \u201cdeeply shocked\u201d that a country it accused of showing \u201ccontempt\u201d for the treaty had been elected vice-president. Iran\u2019s ambassador to the IAEA in Vienna, Reza Najafi, rejected the US statement as \u201cbaseless and politically motivated\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Iran also lashed out at the European Union over sanctions placed on the country, stating that they \u201ctrample\u201d the basic rights of Iran\u2019s citizens.
