Web Desk(National Times)- Iran\u2019s foreign minister arrived in Russia on Monday as peace efforts between Tehran and Washington hung in the balance, following a flurry of regional diplomacy and the\u00a0collapse of planned talks<\/a>\u00a0in Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbas Araghchi arrived in Saint Petersburg, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Telegram, where he is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes after Araghchi visited Oman<\/a> between trips to Islamabad<\/a>, as mediators push to keep peace talks between Tehran and Washington alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump scrapped<\/a> a planned trip to Islamabad by his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a sign that efforts were ongoing, the Fars news agency<\/em> said Iran had sent \u201cwritten messages\u201d to the Americans via mediator Pakistan outlining red lines, including nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fars<\/em> said the messages were not part of formal negotiations, however.
US media outlet Axios<\/em> reported on Sunday that Iran had sent a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, with nuclear negotiations postponed for a later stage, citing a US official and two other sources with knowledge of the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian state news agency IRNA<\/em> cited the report without denying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ceasefire<\/a> in the US-Israeli war with Iran has so far held, but its economic shockwaves have continued to reverberate globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran has sealed off the strait, cutting flows of oil, gas and fertiliser and sending prices soaring, raising fears of food insecurity in developing countries. At the same time, a US blockade of the strait is in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopes for a second round of talks in Pakistan had centred on the planned visit by Witkoff and Kushner, but Trump cancelled<\/a> the trip after Iranian state television said Araghchi had no plans to meet US officials there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, Trump told Fox News<\/em> that if Iran wanted the talks, \u201cthey can come to us, or they can call us<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump faces domestic pressure as fuel prices rise following Iran\u2019s closure of Hormuz, with midterm elections due in November. Polls show the war is unpopular among Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Safe transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Asked whether cancelling signalled renewed fighting, Trump said: \u201cNo, it doesn\u2019t mean that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, Araghchi met<\/a> Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, before travelling to Oman and returning to Islamabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later left for Russia for talks with senior officials, his ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian and Iranian state media confirmed Araghchi\u2019s talks with Putin, citing officials from their respective governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Araghchi himself posted on X that the talks in Oman had focused on ensuring safe transit through Hormuz, \u201cto benefit of all dear neighbors and the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur neighbors are our priority,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards said they had no intention of lifting their blockade, which has roiled energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cControlling the Strait of Hormuz and maintaining the shadow of its deterrent effects over America and the White House\u2019s supporters in the region is the definitive strategy of Islamic Iran,\u201d the Guards said on their official Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States has imposed a blockade of Iranian ports in retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Israel strikes Lebanon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Israel and Hezbollah traded blame<\/a> over violations of the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the military was \u201cvigorously\u201d targeting the Iran-backed militia as both sides claimed new attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the Middle East war on March 2 by firing rockets at Israel to avenge the death of Iran\u2019s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, with Israel responding with strikes and a ground invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But claims that both sides have breached a 10-day ceasefire agreed earlier this month have continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu told Sunday\u2019s weekly cabinet meeting that Hezbollah\u2019s actions were \u201cdismantling the ceasefire\u201d while Hezbollah said it would respond to Israeli violations and its \u201ccontinued occupation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said Israeli strikes on the country\u2019s south on Sunday killed 14 people, including two women and two children, and wounded 37.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state-run National News Agency<\/em> reported that Israeli warplanes had struck after evacuation warnings in Kfar Tibnit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Israeli strike on Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, another of the flagged villages, destroyed a mosque and another religious building, the news agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel, which reported a soldier killed in combat in south Lebanon, says it can act against \u201cplanned, imminent or ongoing attacks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
