ISTANBUL(National Times)- A gunman was killed and two others wounded in a shootout on Tuesday with police outside the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, the local governor said, adding two officers were lightly wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Davut Gul confirmed the killing of one of the assailants during the attack that took place around 12:15 pm (2:15pm PKT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not immediately clear if the intended target was the Israeli consulate. No Israeli diplomats \u201care currently on Turkish soil\u201d, a source familiar with the matter told AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli diplomatic missions had been evacuated \u201cnot only in Turkiye but throughout the region for security reasons\u201d shortly after the October 7, 2023 attack that followed Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza, according to the same source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel said it would not be cowed down, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the \u201ctreacherous attack\u201d and vowed to fight \u201call kinds of terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will not allow \u2026 provocations to harm Turkiye\u2019s climate of security,\u201d Erdogan said in a televised speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe appreciate the Turkish security forces\u2019 swift action in thwarting this attack. Israeli missions around the world have been subjected to countless threats and terrorist attacks. Terror will not deter us,\u201d the Israeli foreign ministry posted on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish public broadcaster TRT<\/em> had previously reported that two of the three attackers had been killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have identified the assailants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkiye\u2019s Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said the assailants came in a rented vehicle from Izmit, a city about 86 kilometres (50 miles) away and that one of them was linked to an \u201corganisation that exploits the region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry later clarified that the dead gunman \u201chad connections with a terrorist group\u201d and said two policemen were \u201cslightly injured\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining two assailants were brothers and one has a drug record, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footage showed one attacker armed with an automatic rifle, dressed in beige cargo pants and black top and carrying a backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>\u2018People panicked\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI saw gunfire suddenly break out \u2026 It went on for quite a while,\u201d a witness who wished to remain anonymous told AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish officials would not immediately reveal the group but local media said it could be Islamic State, whose members clashed with police in Yalova \u2014 which lies on the Sea of Marmara about 90 kilometres (55 miles) southeast of Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IS militants opened fire<\/a> on police in Yalova in December, killing three officers and wounding nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish police have stepped up nationwide raids against IS militants, rounding up 125 suspects after that attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Television images on Tuesday showed police officers opening fire near a busy thoroughfare and an injured person being carried away on a stretcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish media reported that the shootout lasted for about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large police presence was deployed in front of the consulate, located in the Levent business district on the European side of Istanbul, AFP<\/em> journalists witnessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also saw bloodstains on the ground in an adjacent parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immediate vicinity of the consulate sees heightened security measures even under normal circumstances, as the area is cordoned off by police barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Istanbul public prosecutor\u2019s office has launched an investigation while the state-run TRT<\/em> television reported that three suspects were detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe United States condemns in the strongest terms today\u2019s attack on the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul,\u201d US Ambassador to Turkiye Tom Barrack said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAttacks on diplomatic missions are attacks on the international order \u2014 and an assault on the principles that bind nations together,\u201d he added, while commending Turkiye and Turkish security forces for \u201ctheir swift and decisive response\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
