According to environmental monitoring data, Lahore ranked as the fourth most polluted city in the world, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 237, placing it in the \u201cvery unhealthy\u201d category. Several other cities reported even more hazardous levels of pollution. Faisalabad registered an alarming AQI of 772, the highest in the country, while Gujranwala recorded 256 and Bahawalpur 279, indicating dangerous air quality. The worsening smog combined with heavy fog significantly reduced visibility in various regions, prompting authorities to shut down key motorways to prevent accidents. Motorway Police confirmed the closure of M-1 from Rashkai to Peshawar, M-3 from Rajana to Darkhana, M-4 from Faisalabad to Multan, and M-5 from Shershah to Zahir Pir due to unsafe driving conditions. Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said the closures are necessary to protect lives and property, stressing that lane violations during foggy conditions could lead to severe accidents. He urged commuters to exercise caution, follow safety guidelines, avoid unnecessary travel, and use fog lights while driving. Spokesperson added that department is monitoring weather and visibility conditions and will reopen routes once it is deemed safe.
