NEW YORK(National times)- Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani pledged on Wednesday to resist pressure from the Trump administration, saying his government would tackle what he called the \u201ctwin crises\u201d of \u201can authoritarian administration and an affordability crisis.\u201d The 34-year-old, who became the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City, unveiled his transition team and reaffirmed his campaign priorities \u2014 including free buses, rent-stabilised housing, and higher taxes on millionaires to expand social programmes. Mamdani\u2019s victory has already drawn fire from President Donald Trump, who has branded him a \u201ccommunist\u201d and suggested federal funding could be withheld from the city. On election night, Trump posted \u201cAND SO IT BEGINS!\u201d on his Truth Social account shortly after Mamdani\u2019s win. In an interview with Fox News, Trump criticised the mayor-elect\u2019s \u201cangry\u201d victory speech, warning that Mamdani should \u201cbe nice\u201d to him. \u201cHe has to be a little bit respectful of Washington,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIf he\u2019s not, he doesn\u2019t have a chance of succeeding.\u201dMamdani responded that he would not \u201cmince words\u201d when it comes to Trump but would \u201ckeep the door open\u201d for dialogue on issues such as reducing the cost of living. \u201cIt will be my job to stand up for the city,\u201d he said. The mayor-elect named Lina Khan, former FTC chair, Elana Leopold, and Maria Torres-Springer to his transition team. He also confirmed Jessica Tisch will remain as police commissioner.
