{"id":109923,"date":"2025-08-12T13:28:29","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=109923"},"modified":"2025-08-12T13:28:29","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:28:29","slug":"pakistan-secures-major-win-in-indus-waters-treaty-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2025\/109923\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan Secures Major Win in Indus Waters Treaty Dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ISLAMABAD (Rana Tariq) In a landmark decision, the Court of Arbitration has sided with Pakistan on key issues over the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), ruling that India must strictly adhere to the Treaty\u2019s limits in building run-of-river hydropower projects on the Western Rivers \u2014 Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Award, announced on 8 August 2025 and released today, confirms that India is obligated to \u201clet flow\u201d the waters of the Western Rivers for Pakistan\u2019s unrestricted use, with no room for \u201cideal\u201d or \u201cbest practice\u201d deviations beyond the Treaty\u2019s exact provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Court upheld Pakistan\u2019s stance on vital design parameters, including restrictions on low-level outlets, gated spillways, turbine intakes, free-board, and pondage volume. It also reaffirmed that its decisions are final, binding, and set legal precedents for future disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling comes as India has recently suspended participation in the Treaty\u2019s mechanisms and boycotted the proceedings \u2014 a move Pakistan says undermined cooperation.
