LAHORE(National Times)- Former Pakistan hockey captain Khalid Mahmood passed away on Thursday after prolonged illness. He was 84.

According to Khalid’s son, the funeral will be held in Faisalabad on Friday.

Born on Dec 28, 1941 in Jhelum, Khalid was part of some of Pakistan’s most successful hockey squads.

He was a member of the Pakistan team that won silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The right-out player also represented the national side at the 1966 Asian Games, where Pakistan secured another silver.

Two years later, Khalid was part of the national team that clinched gold medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, and was also a member of the squad that won gold at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok.

Khalid served as secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and acted as the national team manager during his career.

The International Hockey Federation, Asian Hockey Federation and Pakistan’s hockey fraternity, including former Olympians, expressed their deep sorrow over Khalid’s demise.
