Pakistan, Belgium Explore Enhanced Cooperation on Climate Action and Sustainable Development

Brussels (National Times) Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, held a bilateral meeting with Belgium’s Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate, Environmental Transition and Sustainable Development, Jean-Luc Crucke, on the sidelines of the seminar “Transboundary Water Resources: A Weaponised Global Common,” hosted by the Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels in collaboration with the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

The meeting focused on strengthening Pakistan-Belgium cooperation in key areas of climate action, water resource management, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

Both ministers discussed opportunities to enhance collaboration on climate adaptation initiatives and improve water management practices in the face of growing environmental challenges. Particular emphasis was placed on leveraging Belgium’s expertise in flood resilience, advanced water technologies, and dredging solutions to support sustainable management of Pakistan’s Indus Basin.

The two sides also explored avenues for joint research on glacial melt, disaster preparedness, risk management, and the development of effective early warning systems to mitigate climate-related risks. Cooperation in accelerating the renewable energy transition and strengthening capacity building in grid management was also discussed.

In addition, the ministers underscored the importance of expanding partnerships in climate research, innovation, technical skills development, and knowledge sharing to address the evolving challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability.

The meeting reflected the shared commitment of Pakistan and Belgium to advancing practical cooperation and fostering innovative solutions for climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental protection.
