Pakistan Calls for EU Support on Indus Waters Treaty During European Parliament Visit

Brussels (National Times) Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, visited the European Parliament on Thursday on the sidelines of the seminar titled “Transboundary Water Resources: A Weaponised Global Common,” organized by the Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels in collaboration with the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ondrej Dostal and provided an opportunity for high-level engagement on issues relating to transboundary water governance and regional stability.

During his discussions at the European Parliament, Dr. Malik presented Pakistan’s perspective on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), emphasizing the critical importance of upholding international agreements and ensuring water security for millions of people dependent on the Indus River system.

The Minister urged the European Union to play a constructive role in promoting respect for the Treaty, expressing concern over what Pakistan describes as India’s unilateral and unlawful actions affecting the agreement. He called upon the EU to adopt a principled position in support of international law, regional peace, and sustainable management of shared water resources.

Dr. Malik stressed that the preservation of international treaties remains essential for maintaining global peace, stability, and cooperation among nations. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with international partners to safeguard water as a catalyst for collaboration and development rather than a source of conflict.

The seminar brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the growing global challenges surrounding transboundary water resources and the need for cooperative frameworks to address emerging environmental and geopolitical pressures.
