Balochistan CM Bugti pledges support to journalists

QUETTA(National Times)- Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti on Saturday said that a free, responsible and informed press is the cornerstone of any democratic society, acknowledging the vital role of journalists in ensuring transparency and keeping the public informed.

He made these remarks on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, adding that journalists in Balochistan are performing their professional duties under extremely challenging conditions. He paid tribute to more than 40 journalists from the province who have lost their lives in the line of duty, terming their sacrifices unforgettable.

He further said that the government would extend full support to make the Siddiq Baloch Media Academy in Quetta fully functional, enabling journalists to acquire modern training, research opportunities and professional skills in line with evolving media trends.

CM Bugti said the provincial government is taking practical steps to address the challenges faced by the journalist community. He noted that the seed money for the Journalists Welfare Endowment Fund has been increased to provide financial support to journalists and their families in difficult times. He added that efforts are also underway to strengthen health insurance coverage, financial assistance and emergency support mechanisms for media workers.

The chief minister said that the first-ever housing scheme for working journalists in Balochistan has been approved and work on the project is progressing. He added that the government is committed to its timely completion to ensure dignified housing facilities for journalists.

CM Bugti said that Balochistan’s first digital media policy has been approved to promote digital platforms in an organised manner while also supporting credible and active print media organisations.

He reiterated that print, electronic and social media would continue to maintain their relevance and identity, assuring that no segment of the media industry would be adversely affected in terms of employment.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the principles of press freedom and ensuring the protection, welfare and professional independence of journalists, adding that these efforts are vital for building a strong, balanced and progressive society.
