Truth Essential for Peace, Free Press Vital for Democracy: President Asif Ali Zardari

ISLAMABAD (National Times) Asif Ali Zardari has said that truth is indispensable for lasting peace and a free press remains a cornerstone of democracy, as he extended his message on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2026).
In his message, the President conveyed warm greetings to journalists, editors, media workers, and professionals in Pakistan and around the world, noting that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlights the vital role of truth in building a peaceful society. He emphasized that in today’s world, truth depends on those who have the courage and integrity to seek, verify, and present it.
Asif Ali Zardari observed that press freedom faces serious challenges globally, including misinformation and disinformation that undermine public trust and distort democratic discourse. He also pointed out that while artificial intelligence presents vast opportunities, it also poses significant risks, especially when misused through tools such as deepfakes.
The President noted with concern that powerful global media—particularly social media platforms—are increasingly being used to promote divisive agendas, including xenophobia, racism, and populism. He remarked that large technology companies often attempt to influence public opinion through algorithm-driven narratives, at times working against developing nations and marginalized communities. He stressed that today, the free press is threatened not only by state actors but also by non-state actors, including tech giants and big business.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment, he said that freedom of the press is both a constitutional guarantee and a democratic necessity. He highlighted that Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan ensures press freedom subject to reasonable restrictions, while Article 19-A of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees citizens’ right to access information. He added that a free, independent, and diverse media reflects the strength of a confident nation and is essential for accountability, transparency, and open inquiry.
At the same time, he stressed that press freedom comes with responsibility, urging media professionals to prioritize accuracy over speed and maintain balance over partisanship. He described public trust as the most valuable asset of a free press, which must be carefully earned and safeguarded.
Highlighting current challenges, the President warned of coordinated disinformation campaigns targeting Pakistan aimed at creating division and weakening national unity. Referring to recent events, he said that during tensions in May 2025, the nation stood united, and Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos symbolized both military resolve and national sovereignty. He praised Pakistan’s media for countering false narratives with facts and clarity.
He also paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of truth, particularly in conflict zones, and called on federal and provincial governments to ensure protective laws and a safe working environment for media professionals. He urged media organizations to uphold high ethical standards and encouraged citizens to reject falsehood and support credible journalism.
Concluding his message, Asif Ali Zardari expressed confidence that Pakistan can build a resilient and responsible information ecosystem grounded in truth—essential not only for democracy but also for peace, stability, and the country’s rightful place in the world.
