Islamabad (National Times) Mohammad Masood, who served as Pakistan’s Head of Mission to the European Communities from 1970 to 1973, played a pivotal role during a formative phase of Pakistan’s engagement with European institutions.
On November 26, 1970, he presented his credentials to Franco Maria Malfatti, then President of the Commission of the European Communities, marking a key milestone in formal diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Europe.
His tenure coincided with the early evolution of ties between Pakistan and the European Economic Community, as both sides worked to strengthen cooperation in trade and economic affairs.
Ambassador Masood was also regarded as a pioneer of cultural diplomacy, promoting sports exchanges and people-to-people contacts to deepen bilateral ties. A notable highlight of his tenure came on March 27, 1971, when he presented the Hockey World Cup trophy to René Frank, President of the International Hockey Federation, in Brussels.
The ornate trophy—featuring a wooden base inlaid with ivory and topped with a globe and hockey structure in silver and gold—was a gift from Pakistan for the newly established tournament. Designed by Pakistani artist Bashir Moojid, the trophy remains in use to this day.
Hockey continues to enjoy widespread popularity across Europe, particularly in Belgium, which is set to co-host the upcoming Hockey World Cup tournament.
Ambassador Masood’s contributions remain a lasting part of Pakistan’s diplomatic legacy, reflecting early efforts to build enduring partnerships with Europe through both formal diplomacy and cultural engagement.
