UAE to phase out traditional health card system from 2026

DUBAI(National Times)- Health authorities in the United Arab Emirates have announced that the traditional physical health card system will be discontinued from 2026 as part of a broader digital transformation in the healthcare sector. According to media reports, the existing physical health card framework will be gradually phased out and replaced with an alternative mechanism enabling access to medical services through integrated digital systems. Officials stated that the move forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise healthcare administration. Under the new framework, health insurance coverage and digital identification systems will play a central role in facilitating patient access to services. Authorities noted that patients’ medical records are already stored within interconnected digital platforms, reducing the need for a separate physical health card. The transition is scheduled to take effect in 2026, with relevant institutions tasked with completing awareness campaigns and preparatory measures during the interim period. Sources within the healthcare sector said the decision aims to simplify administrative procedures and accelerate service delivery across public and private medical facilities. Residents have been advised to verify the status of their health insurance policies and remain informed through official government platforms regarding updates and implementation timelines. Officials added that the transition will be carried out in phases to ensure minimal disruption, with comprehensive guidance to be provided to existing users. Further details are expected to be announced in due course.
