Rawalpindi activates automated e-challan system through Safe City cameras

RAWALPINDI(National times)- The twin city of the federal capital has officially activated the e-challan system for traffic violations starting today. Automated e-challaning has begun through Safe City Project cameras. Under the system, images of violations along with a coded e-challan will be sent to the vehicle owner, and the fine must be paid within the specified time. The e-challaning system is linked to the Safe City Command and Control Center, and traffic violations will be recorded through automated CCTV cameras. Automatic fines will be issued for traffic signal violations, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, lane violations, and using a mobile phone while driving. Similarly, non-standard or illegal number plates will also trigger automatic action, and the challan will be issued immediately and delivered to the violator’s home address. Under the Safe City project, more than 2,000 cameras have been installed at 359 locations in Rawalpindi, along with 15 cameras at entry and exit points. These cameras are being used effectively to monitor public spaces, manage traffic, assist traffic police performance, and oversee major roads. According to officials, the surveillance system is also helping in timely reporting of crimes and incidents.
