Corruption increases due to weak governance in country: Miftah

KARACHI(National times)- Former Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Thursday said that corruption has increased in the country due to weak governance and added that the whole system needs to be changed. Speaking on the program “Dunya Meher Bokhari Kay Sath”, Miftah Ismail said that the IMF report referred to the year 2019, when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was in power. During the PTI government, sugar was exported by giving subsidies, he said. He said that at that time, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had expressed displeasure over that decision. In 2024, the PML-N and PDM government repeated the same thing. We need a change in the system, he added. The former finance minister said that sugar is being sold at an inflated price, costing Rs 50 to Rs 60 more per kilogram. He said that most of the sugar mills in the country are owned by politicians. He said that when meetings take place, no one talks about the poor. He said that governance is weak, and corruption is very high in the country. Miftah Ismail appreciated government’s decision to provide fertilizer to farmers on reduced prices. He also lauded government’s anti-money laundering measures.
