Karachi faces heavy rainfall, urban flooding risks as monsoon system intensifies

KARACHI(National times)- The monsoon system over Sindh has intensified into a deep depression, prompting the Meteorological Department to forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Karachi today (September 9). Authorities have also issued warnings about the potential urban flooding in the city. Meteorologists have predicted between four to six spells of rain throughout the day, with some areas expected to receive over 100 millimeters of precipitation. The department described the weather system as unusual and complex, originating from India and entering Sindh as a depression or deep depression. Due to the unpredictable path of this system, rainfall intensity is expected to vary across different parts of the region. Heavy rains have already caused concerns about urban flooding in Karachi, while the Malir River, which had remained dry for a long period, witnessed flash flooding a day earlier.
In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, Jinnah Sindh Medical University has postponed all exams scheduled for September 9. The university administration has also implemented a work-from-home policy, shifting all classes to an online format. The Vice-Chancellor stated that this decision prioritizes the safety and well-being of students and staff. Since Monday, Karachi has experienced intermittent light to heavy showers, leading to water accumulation in low-lying areas. The Met Office and district administration have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from electric poles, exposed wires, and deep water bodies, and contact rescue services immediately in case of emergencies.
