KABUL (National times)- Another powerful earthquake has been recorded in southeastern Afghanistan, the third to strike the region in the past four days. Tremors were also felt in several areas of Pakistan. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the latest quake measured 6.2 in magnitude, with its epicenter located in Shiwa district near the Pakistan border, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Initial reports indicate damage in the Barkash Kot area, though details are still being collected from affected regions. The provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar are among the worst hit, where thousands of houses have been completely destroyed. According to the Taliban administration, the three earthquakes that struck over the past four days have so far claimed 2,205 lives and injured at least 3,640 people. Rescue teams continue searching for people trapped under the rubble. Aid workers have recovered bodies from collapsed houses, while displaced families are forced to live under the open sky in extremely harsh conditions. The United Nations and other international aid agencies have warned that resources for providing food, medical aid, and shelter to the affected areas are running short, putting thousands of lives at risk, while access to remote regions remains severely restricted. It should be noted that Sunday’s first earthquake, measuring 6.0, was among the deadliest in Afghanistan in recent years, causing widespread destruction in Kunar and Nangarhar. This was followed by a second earthquake on Tuesday, measuring 5.5, which disrupted rescue operations and triggered rockfalls from mountains, cutting off access to many rural areas.
