Judges’ selection for constitutional benches remains undecided, matter sent back to Judicial Commission

ISLAMABAD(National times)- The procedure for selecting judges for constitutional benches could not be finalized, and the matter has been referred back to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. The subcommittee of the Judicial Commission, chaired by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, held a meeting but failed to reach a conclusion on the criteria for the appointment of judges to constitutional benches. According to sources, the subcommittee was unable to set standards for judge selection, leading to the issue being returned to the Judicial Commission. Members of the committee reportedly opposed the formulation of new rules, while the decision on setting regulations for reviewing the performance of high court judges was also deferred. The subcommittee will reconvene to deliberate further. It is noteworthy that following the 26th constitutional amendment, there is no formal procedure in place for the appointment of judges to constitutional benches. Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, who also heads the Judicial Commission, had constituted the subcommittee.
