Embankments break, residents evacuate as water level rises in River Sutlej

BAHAWALNAGAR, ARIFWALA, KASUR(National times)- Due to recent rains, the water level in the River Sutlej continues to rise, leading to breaches in several protective embankments. In Bahawalnagar, a major breach occurred near the village Togeera Sharif at the Bhukan Pattan area due to the steadily increasing water level. This has caused widespread damage. The floodwaters have washed away Momika Road, severing ground connectivity between several villages and Bahawalnagar. Water has entered farmlands and destroyed standing crops, while many residential areas are now submerged. According to rescue sources, evacuation of residents from riverine areas is underway, and relief teams are busy relocating affected individuals to safer locations. In Arifwala, the low-level flooding situation in the River Sutlej has worsened. Locally built protective embankments have begun to collapse under the pressure of the floodwaters, resulting in further flooding in nearby areas. Standing crops have been destroyed on a large scale, causing significant financial losses to farmers. Water has also entered smaller settlements, leaving residents in severe distress. Sources report that people from areas close to the river are continuing to evacuate, while rescue organizations are using boats and other means to transport stranded individuals to safety. Meanwhile, in Kasur, low-level flooding in the River Sutlej has affected several villages, including Bhikki Wind, Chanda Singh Wala, Kalu Wara, and Haku Wala, cutting them off from the surrounding areas. Floodwaters have entered fields, barns, and homes, submerging crops like rice, corn, and millet under several feet of water. Prolonged waterlogging in agricultural lands poses a serious threat of heavy losses to farmers.Evacuation operations by rescue agencies are ongoing, and the district administration remains on high alert to deal with the flood situation. Residents of affected villages are being relocated to safe locations.
