Brussels (National Times) The European Union Special Envoy on Climate Change and Environmental Diplomacy, Mr. Anthony Agotha, called on the high-level parliamentary delegation of Pakistan led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Member of the National Assembly and former Foreign Minister, during their official visit to Brussels. The meeting focused on advancing Pakistan-EU cooperation on climate justice, water security, and sustainable development.
Chairman Bhutto Zardari raised serious concerns over India’s recent decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that such unilateral actions represent a dangerous precedent in the weaponization of climate-sensitive and shared natural resources. He emphasized that undermining foundational international agreements not only destabilizes regional peace but also threatens the integrity of global water diplomacy.
The two sides held a constructive exchange on the deepening global climate crisis, with Chairman Bhutto Zardari underscoring Pakistan’s acute vulnerability as a frontline state disproportionately affected by climate-induced disasters. The delegation drew attention to the catastrophic human and economic toll of the 2022 floods, stressing the urgent need for strengthened adaptation financing and long-term international support.
The discussions also explored opportunities for enhanced EU-Pakistan cooperation on green technology transfer, climate-resilient infrastructure, and sustainable energy transition. The delegation advocated for inclusive partnerships that prioritize equity, innovation, and resilience, while acknowledging the EU’s vital role in supporting Pakistan’s flood recovery and green development agenda.
Both sides agreed on the importance of depoliticizing environmental issues and building just, inclusive, and forward-looking green partnerships. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to collaborative, rule-based climate action in support of vulnerable communities and ecosystems.
