Pakistani scientist honored with global award in UAE

Pakistan(National Times)- ABU DHABI: Pakistan’s agricultural innovation received global recognition as Dr Ghulam Sarwar Markhand, a distinguished Pakistani researcher from Shah Latif University Khairpur Sindh, was honored with the prestigious Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation in the “Influential Figure” category during a grand ceremony held at Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi. The event, attended by representatives from 66 countries over two days, celebrated global achievements in sustainable agriculture and innovation. Dr Markhand’s recognition highlights Pakistan’s contribution to global scientific research in agriculture. Speaking with Geo News, the researcher proudly stated that it was a great honour to receive the award for his contributions to date palm research. He shared that over 180 researchers and scholars from 28 countries submitted their work for the “Influential Figure” category, with Pakistan and Egypt winning the top awards in this category.

Pakistan-UAE MoU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the ceremony to organise the Second Pakistan International Date Palm Festival 2025 in Pakistan. The MoU was signed by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, representing Pakistan, and Khalifa International Award General Secretary Dr Abdelouahhab Zaid. The MoU aims to promote date palm cultivation and sustainable farming practices. It seeks to foster innovation and knowledge exchange between Pakistan and the UAE, strengthening their agricultural collaboration. Hussain emphasised the significance of Pakistan-UAE collaboration, stating: “This MoU and Dr Markhand’s recognition reflect Pakistan’s commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainable practices. Together, we can address global challenges like food security and climate change.” While discussing date production potential in Pakistan, Hussain said that the MoU will help enhance date production and introduce new varieties in the country. He expressed hope that Pakistan-UAE collaboration will lead to an increase in date exports from Pakistan.

Sheikh Nahayan, Ambassador Tirmizi recognised

The UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, commended the contributions of award winners in advancing agricultural innovation. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, was also recognised for his efforts in strengthening agricultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations. The event, organised under the patronage of UAE Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, concluded with accolades for international figures contributing to the growth of the date palm sector and global agriculture.
