Man held in Karachi for swindling, blackmailing woman via matrimonial app

KARACHI(National Times)- The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on Friday claimed to have arrested a man for allegedly depriving a woman of approximately Rs4.45 million by making empty promises of marriage on a matrimonial app.

According to the agency, the suspect, posing as “Hassam Uddin”, allegedly obtained the money through online bank transfers and subsequently threatened the woman to circulate her doctored photographs on social media to extort further money.

He was booked in a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, it added.

Initial investigations suggest that the suspect may have targeted several other women as well through similar modus operandi, the agency said, urging other victims to come forward and report their complaints, assuring them of complete confidentiality.

The public was advised to exercise caution while using matrimonial apps and social media platforms.
