Brussels (National Times) H.E. Jalaluddin Abdur Rahim (1906–1977), Pakistan’s first Ambassador to Belgium, is being commemorated for his pioneering role in establishing diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Belgium. Born in Chittagong, he pursued higher education at the University of Dhaka, University of Cambridge, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and the University of Calcutta.
A prominent left-leaning leader during the Pakistan Movement, Rahim later joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan, where he made significant contributions to the country’s early diplomatic efforts. He served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium from April 1952 to 1953, becoming the first to hold the position.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Rahim also served as ambassador to several countries, including Germany and France, and held the post of Foreign Secretary of Pakistan from 1953 to 1955 under Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Bogra. His enduring contributions are remembered as foundational in shaping Pakistan–Belgium relations.
