Iran-backed Houthis plan fresh strikes on Israel amid Middle East escalation

SANAA(National Times)- The Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen has announced plans to resume missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and shipping routes in the Red Sea, according to two senior officials within the organization. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the group’s top leadership has not yet issued a formal statement, said the first attack could be launched as early as tonight. If carried out, renewed assaults in the Red Sea could disrupt international maritime traffic along one of the world’s most vital trade corridors. Previous attacks in the area had forced several commercial vessels to reroute, raising concerns about global supply chains and shipping costs. The Houthis had earlier halted attacks in the Red Sea under an understanding reached with the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Following that arrangement, the United States suspended its military operations against the group. Similarly, attacks on Israel were paused after a ceasefire in Gaza in October last year, which had contributed to a relative easing of tensions in the region. According to the latest information, the Houthi group now intends to reactivate operations in support of Iran. A renewed campaign could have significant implications not only for Israel but also for global maritime trade and regional stability. No final announcement has yet been made by the Houthi leadership, and the international community is closely monitoring the situation.
