LAHORE(National times)- Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore (BISE Lahore) has announced sweeping reforms in its examination system, introducing centralised marking for 9th class practical exams and a modern e-marking mechanism to improve transparency and curb irregularities. Speaking to media, BISE Secretary Rizwan Nazir said the changes were initiated following numerous complaints regarding mismanagement and alleged misuse of marks in practical examinations. “Previously, examiners had complete discretion over the full 30-mark allocation, which led to widespread misuse,” Nazir stated, adding that such practices would no longer be tolerated. Under the new policy, practical exams for 9th-grade students will now be centrally marked. CCTV cameras will be installed in laboratories to monitor assessment processes and ensure integrity. Practical evaluations will also become a mandatory component of overall assessment. The reforms were introduced on the special directives of Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat to restore fairness and credibility in the examination system. In another major step, BISE Lahore has launched an e-marking system for theory papers. Students will respond on designated e-sheets, which will be scanned and digitised. Examiners will receive secure IDs, allowing them to mark scripts remotely under real-time webcam monitoring. Instead of assigning hundreds of complete scripts to a single examiner, the new system will divide marking into smaller batches of questions to enhance accuracy and efficiency. The e-marking system will be introduced initially in the ICS first annual examinations across Punjab this year, with plans to extend it to all subjects within the next two to three years.
