National hero Aitzaz Hasan remembered on 10th anniversary of his sacrifice

Pakistan(National Times)- On January 6, 2014, the district of Hangu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was spared a devastating tragedy thanks to the bravery of Aitzaz Hasan, a ninth-grade student at Government Higher Secondary School, Ibrahimzai. Confronting a suicide bomber outside his school, Aitzaz forced the attacker to detonate his explosives prematurely, saving the lives of more than 400 students. Hasan was posthumously awarded Sitara-e-Shujaat for his bravery.Play Video Today marks the 10th anniversary of his martyrdom, a moment to honour his extraordinary courage and selflessness. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Aitzaz on the occasion in a social media post on X. “Today, we commemorate the martyrdom of Shaheed Aitezaz Hasan, a true son of the soil from district Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, whose extraordinary courage stands as a beacon of hope and resilience,” said the prime minister. He noted that at just 15 years of age, Aitezaz displayed unparalleled bravery, valiantly sacrificing his life to shield his school and classmates from a devastating attack. “His selflessness and unwavering resolve remind us of his lasting impact a single act of courage can have on countless lives,” the prime minister added. He emphasised that Aitezaz’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations. However, his family laments that the promises made by the government to recognise and honour Aitzaz’s sacrifice remain unfulfilled. Speaking to Geo News Mujahid Ali, father of the national hero, said: “Our child, Shaheed Aitzaz Hasan, was not just our child but the nation’s child.  The sacrifice he made is no secret to Pakistan or the world. Unfortunately, the promises the government made to us have not been fulfilled—not even a single one.” Aitzaz’s classmates fondly remember him as a hero, with many expressing gratitude for his ultimate sacrifice, which allowed them to pursue their lives and dreams. “I, along with Shaheed Aitzaz Hasan and many of our classmates, studied together. All of us miss him deeply,” said Aitzaz’s former classmate, Yasir Hussain.  He added: “What we demand is that the government observe his death anniversary and fulfil the commitments made to us, to his family.” The promises made by the government at the time included the construction of a sports ground and degree colleges in Aitzaz’s honour. However, these commitments remain unfulfilled, leaving his family and community disheartened. On this solemn occasion, the family of Hasan and the local community called upon the government to honour its word and ensure the legacy of this national hero is preserved.
