EPA Punjab seizes smoke-emitting PU buses amid anti-pollution crackdown

LAHORE(National times)- The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has imposed a ban on Punjab University buses emitting excessive smoke. According to officials, EPA inspection teams stopped several university buses on Canal Road during routine checks. The vehicles were found producing thick smoke, significantly contributing to air pollution in Lahore. Upon further examination, the buses also lacked the mandatory fitness certificates required to operate on public roads. Authorities immediately seized the vehicles, while legal action has been initiated under the Environmental Protection Act. The EPA confirmed that the operation is part of a wider crackdown launched against smoke-emitting buses belonging to universities, colleges, schools and hospitals. The ban aims to restrict the movement of unfit and poorly maintained vehicles that are considered key contributors to deteriorating air quality. Lahore and several other cities in Punjab have been experiencing severe smog and worsening air pollution, prompting the government to intensify regulatory measures. Officials stated that old buses and heavy vehicles such as trucks are among the leading sources of emissions. The EPA has now deployed monitoring teams across the province to ensure compliance and prevent any unfit vehicle from entering roads. The agency has warned that strict penalties will be imposed on institutions failing to meet environmental standards. Authorities reiterated that reducing vehicular emissions is essential to protecting public health and improving air quality in Punjab.
