New barracks at Kot Lakhpat jail to house 2,000 prisoners

LAHORE(National times)- Kot Lakhpat Jail has added five new double-storey barracks to accommodate inmates. The inauguration was conducted by Task Force Chairman Rana Minan Khan and Punjab Interior Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi. A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department confirmed that the new barracks have a combined capacity to house 2,000 prisoners. During the inauguration, the officials interacted with inmates to understand their concerns. They also directed that free legal aid be provided to prisoners unable to afford lawyers. The Punjab Interior Secretary instructed that all inmates be provided with warm blankets according to the season. Additionally, prison psychologists are to maintain regular contact with inmates suffering from mental health issues and provide counselling services. Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi revealed that over 850 citizens have so far used the official prison visitation app to meet their relatives in Punjab jails. The app enables advance online booking and is now available across all jails in the province.
