Sher Shah Dam to be breached amid high flood in Chenab: PDMA

MULTAN(National times)- PDMA has decided to breach Sher Shah Dam in the wake of high level flood in the Chenab River. Speaking at a press conference, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has said there is a high level of flood in the Chenab River, due to which it has been decided to breach the Sher Shah Dam. Irfan Ali Kathia said 26 districts of Punjab and 4,364 settlements were affected by the floods. Rains are falling in the southern belt, and rescue operations will face difficulties due to the rain, he added.“Punjab is facing a flood situation, Gujarat is facing urban flooding, there is an evacuation in Jalalpur Pirwala, and there are very heavy rains in the tenth spell of the monsoon,” the DG said. Irfan Ali Kathia said that there has been heavy rain in Multan, Lahore and Faisalabad on Monday, adding all the highways of Gujarat are clear, ‘we have received a flood alert from the Indian High Commission.’ ‘Around 137,000 cusecs of water is flowing from Head Sulemanki, the monsoon will continue for a few more days, we breached Mai Safora at 183,000 cusecs, 26 districts across Punjab have been affected by this flood. “Those in the tent settlements are being provided with three meals a day, the water level has been stable for the last 36 hours, the water level at Panjnad has gradually increased, a large population has been evacuated from Jalalpur Pirwala, 3,600 people were evacuated in a day,” the DG said. The PDMA chief said the boat accident was unfortunate, more than 900,000 people in the villages were affected, technical decisions were taken into account in the breaching, and Multan will remain under stress in the next 48 hours. He said that more than 1.5 million animals have been moved to a safe place, the district administration is ensuring the supply of dry food, and that 61 deaths have occurred across Punjab to date. Irfan Ali Kathia said that the help of the Pakistan Navy was also taken in the rescue operation, and there is no shortage of tents.
