Rawal Dam spillways set to open as water level rises

ISLAMABAD(National times)- Heavy rains in Islamabad and its surrounding areas have filled Rawal Dam to the level of 1,751.80 feet, prompting the district administration to open spillways of the dam on Sunday (today) at 8am. Heavy rains have prompted an alert from the district administration. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration said that Rawal Dam spillways will open today at 8am. The district administration advised citizens to avoid visiting low-lying areas and directed all relevant departments to remain on alert to deal with any emergency situation. Meanwhile, The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert for extremely high-level flooding in rivers Sutlej, Chenab, and hill torrents. According to Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia, an exceptionally high flood is expected at Panjnad within the next 24 hours. He added that the Sutlej River will continue to face extremely high flooding at Ganda Singh Wala. Flood situation persists in Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej as PDMA and other departments on Saturday released data pertaining to water situation the rivers.
