KARACHI(National times)- A solemn and dignified change of guard took place at the Mazar-e-Quaid on Saturday to mark the 60th Defence and Martyrs Day of Pakistan. A smartly turned-out contingent from the Pakistan Air Force Academy Asghar Khan assumed guard duties at the mausoleum of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Air Vice Marshal Shahryar Khan was the chief guest at the event. He laid a floral wreath at the mausoleum, paid tribute to the nation’s founder, and recorded his impressions in the guestbook. He also reviewed the parade and inspected the PAF guard. Addressing the ceremony, the Air Vice Marshal said the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has always lived up to the nation’s expectations and has never disappointed its people. “We stand ready on every front and will remain a solid wall in defence of the homeland,” he said. Referring to the downing of six Indian jets, including Rafaels, during the May conflict, he asserted, “Next time, it won’t be 0-6 – it’ll be 0-60.” He further remarked that Pakistan’s enemies have always faced defeat and will continue to receive a befitting response to any aggression. Referring to “Operation Bunyanun Marṣuṣ”, he said it rekindled the spirit of September 6, a day when Pakistan foiled the nefarious designs of its adversaries. Shahryar Khan said that taking command of the air force on such a significant day was a matter of pride. “This guard changing is not a mere tradition; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to the ideals of Quaid-e-Azam, who taught us unity. We are the custodians of his vision and are ready to defeat the enemy on all fronts.” Highlighting the Pakistan Air Force’s role in disaster relief and rescue operations, he added, “Defending every inch of this nation — in the air or on the ground — is our sacred responsibility. Under the leadership of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, the PAF has become even more modern and capable.” He reaffirmed the trust of the Pakistani people in their armed forces, saying, “The nation is proud of the success of Pakistan’s military. I assure you that the defence of our skies is in strong and capable hands.” Commanding officers at the ceremony also paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for peace. They honoured the parents who sacrificed their sons for the country, pledging to foil any threats against Pakistan’s sovereignty. Across the country, Defence and Martyrs Day was commemorated with patriotic fervour. The day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques for the peace and prosperity of the nation.
