Belgian Candidate for UNHCR High Commissioner Meets Pakistani Envoy to Discuss Future Cooperation

Islamabad (National Times) Dr. Nicole de Moor, Member of the Flemish Parliament and Belgium’s candidate for the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), met with Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi in Islamabad. She was accompanied by Ambassador William Asselborn, Director for Asia and Oceania at the Belgian Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Dr. de Moor shared her vision for the future of UNHCR, highlighting her continued work on global migration and asylum-related issues. The discussion also focused on strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and Belgium, particularly in the humanitarian and refugee sectors.

Pakistan was acknowledged as a key partner of UNHCR, with decades-long experience in hosting and supporting refugees. It was also noted that Pakistan will assume the Chair of the UNHCR Executive Committee in October 2025, further reaffirming its leading role in international refugee affairs.
