Fazl reiterates demand to hold fresh elections

PESHAWAR (National Times) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman once again demanded fresh elections in the country.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar on Sunday, the JUI-F chief said, “The incumbent parliament is fake and therefore it shouldn’t go for the constitutional amendment. They are planning to impose martial law through the constitutional amendment but we didn’t support it.”

He criticised the current government for pursuing constitutional amendments for political gains and claimed that the parliament lacks the authority for such significant changes to the constitution.

The veteran politician said that JUI-F supports the constitutional courts as it was agreed upon by the ruling parties in the charter of democracy.
He warned that the conflict in Lebanon could engulf the entire world, alleging that Israel aims to expand the war into the Arab world and Gulf nations.

Discussing the ongoing Israeli aggression in Islamic countries, he emphasised the need for unity among nations like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, and others.

Addressing the dire situation in tribal areas, he lamented the unrest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that residents are more distressed in the aftermath of FATA’s merger with KP.

“I told General retd Bajwa and Naveed Mukhtar that this is not the right time for merger,” he said.

Talking about the recent political rallies, Rehman said that it is the right of every party to hold its power show.

He grilled the government for creating hurdles in the PTI rally in Rawalpindi.
