Powers given to pharmaceutical companies to fix prices of medicines challenged

LAHORE (National Times) Pharmaceutical companies powers for fixing the price of medicines has been challenged in Lahore High Court (LHC).
A citizen Muhammad Aslam filed petition in the court through Nadim Sarwar advocate Friday making federal government, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and others respondents.

The petition said cabinet has taken away the powers of fixing prices of medicines from DRAP and delegated these powers to pharmaceutical companies.

The petition further said the federal government has seconded illegally the decision of care taker government. The court had ordered federal cabinet to review the matter afresh.

It has been said further in the petition that the endorsement of decision of care taker government by federal government despite court’s orders is unconstitutional. The pharmaceutical companies are selling medicines at arbitrary rates and shifting the burden on people.

The court has been requested to nullify the notification on giving the powers to pharmaceutical companies to fix rate of medicines.
