Hina Rabbani urges global community to share climate catastrophe’s burden equally

WASHINGTON DC (National Times) – Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar emphasized that the global community must share the burden of the climate crisis equally, since it is a global challenge that requires response and collective action is needed.

The state minister said in a meeting with US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Tuesday that despite being one of the countries with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan faces the biggest loss from climate change. She said that the US Congress can play an important role in helping vulnerable countries cope with the environmental crisis.

Hina Rabbani Khar, briefing the congresswoman on the large-scale devastation caused by climate flooding in Pakistan, welcomed the timely assistance already provided by the US government. She said more support from the United States and the international community would be needed to help build a better, greener and more resilient Pakistan.

Congresswoman Omar expressed her solidarity with the loss of life and destruction caused by the unprecedented flooding. She assured Pakistan of her support in providing more aid to deal with the devastating floods.

The two sides also discussed the need for a lasting commitment in various sectors, including agriculture and climate change.
